A skin booster is an injectable placed into or just under the skin to improve its quality: hydration, firmness, texture and fine lines. It does not add volume or change the shape of your face. At Nova Beauty Clinic in East Finchley, London, we use Profhilo, SkinVive and Teosyal Redensity 1 for the face, neck and chest, Jalupro Young Eye for the skin around the eyes, and polynucleotides (Plinest, and PolyPhil Eye for the eye area). Skin boosters suit adults whose skin looks dull, dry, crepey or tired, or has started to lose its bounce, and who want it to look like better skin rather than like a treatment. They are not for anyone under 18, and they are the wrong choice if what you want is lift, volume or a smaller jawline. If you are weighing a booster against HIFU, read what HIFU actually feels like.
What happens at your appointment
Your first visit is a free consultation. We look at your skin in good light, go through your health and medicines, photograph your skin for your record, and say plainly which booster, if any, fits what you have described, and when something else, or nothing at all, is the better answer. First-time clients are offered a few days to think; returning clients can go ahead on the day. On the day the skin is cleaned and numbing cream is applied if you want it. Profhilo is placed at five points on each side of the face and spreads on its own. SkinVive, Redensity 1 and polynucleotides are placed as many tiny droplets across the area. Jalupro Young Eye and PolyPhil Eye are placed into the thin skin around the eyes with a fine needle or a blunt cannula. A session takes about 30 minutes, and you leave with a written aftercare sheet.
What results to expect and how long they last
Nothing dramatic happens on the day. Small bumps at the injection points flatten within hours to a day. Most people notice better hydration and glow at about two to four weeks, with firmer, smoother skin building over the course. Profhilo is a course of two sessions, four weeks apart; the manufacturer suggests a repeat every six months, which is a protocol rather than a measured end point, and in our experience most people see a benefit for roughly four to eight months. SkinVive is usually one session, with most people still noticing an improvement at six months and some up to nine (manufacturer data, 2026). Redensity 1 is three sessions, three to four weeks apart, lasting at least three months after the course. Jalupro Young Eye and the polynucleotides are courses of three to four sessions, two to three weeks apart, with a top-up at about six to nine months. Results vary with your skin, age, sun exposure and lifestyle.
Who it suits and who it does not
Skin boosters suit adults from their thirties onwards with dull, dry, finely lined or crepey skin, people whose skin has thinned after weight loss, illness or menopause, and people who have had filler and want better skin over it. They do not suit anyone under 18 (it is an offence in England to give a cosmetic injectable to a child), anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone allergic to hyaluronic acid or local anaesthetics, anyone allergic to fish (the polynucleotides are fish-derived), or anyone with an infection, cold sore or active skin problem in the area. Untreated epilepsy, porphyria, a tendency to raised scarring, autoimmune conditions, blood thinners and prescription acne tablets in the last six months all need a discussion first. Where a prescription treatment would serve you better, we will tell you one exists; it is discussed and prescribed only after a face-to-face assessment. The honest limit
A skin booster will not lift a sagging jawline, fill a hollow cheek or tear trough, or smooth lines made by frowning. It improves the skin over the structure, not the structure. The published evidence for most boosters is short: follow-up in the trials is usually three months or less, so the long-term figures you read elsewhere are protocols and clinic impressions, including ours. Results vary and cannot be guaranteed.

Most boosters are a course. The full plan and its total cost are set out in writing at your consultation, before anything is opened.
Risks
Common and short-lived: redness, swelling, bumps, tenderness, itching and bruising at the injection points, settling within a few days and almost always within two weeks; bruising around the eyes can take up to ten days and is common there (in a 2023 study of 48 people treated around the eyes with a polynucleotide, about half had swelling and a third bruised).
Less common: a firmer lump that lasts longer, infection, a cold sore flare, or an allergic reaction, including to fish-derived polynucleotides. Rare but serious: product injected into or near a blood vessel can block it and damage the skin, and near the eye can very rarely affect vision. We screen for this, stay in the correct layer, and keep a dissolving treatment for hyaluronic acid products on site. Polynucleotides cannot be dissolved.

Common questions
What is the difference between a skin booster and filler?
Filler is a thicker gel placed deeper to add volume or shape. A skin booster is a thinner product placed in or just under the skin to improve its quality: hydration, firmness, texture and fine lines. A booster will not change the shape of your face.
Is Profhilo a filler?
No. It is a high concentration of hyaluronic acid that spreads through the tissue rather than staying where it is placed. It hydrates and firms skin; it does not add volume or lift.
How long does Profhilo last?
The six-month repeat is the manufacturer's protocol, not a measured end point, and most published follow-up is twelve weeks or less. Our honest clinical impression is four to eight months of benefit for most people.
Do skin boosters hurt?
Expect a short sting at each point. SkinVive and Redensity 1 contain a local anaesthetic, so the area becomes more comfortable as the treatment goes on. Numbing cream is available for any booster if you prefer.
Which booster is right for the under-eye area?
Jalupro Young Eye or PolyPhil Eye, both made for the thin skin around the eyes. They help crepey texture, fine lines and dark circles caused by thin skin. They will not fill a hollow (that is filler) or fix dark circles caused by pigment, and we will tell you which you have.
Can I have skin boosters with filler or other treatments?
Yes, with spacing. We leave about two weeks between a booster and any other injectable, peel, laser, HIFU or microneedling on the same area, and four weeks either side of dental work. Boosters sit well alongside skincare and LED in a longer plan.
How many sessions do I need?
Profhilo: two, four weeks apart. SkinVive: usually one. Redensity 1: three. Jalupro Young Eye and polynucleotides: three to four, two to three weeks apart. Most people then have a top-up every six to nine months.
Can I have a skin booster if I am under 18?
No. We do not give any cosmetic injectable to anyone under 18, which is the law in England, and we may ask for photo ID.
