Dermal filler is a soft hyaluronic acid gel placed under the skin to restore volume, support or shape where the face has lost it: cheeks, jawline, chin, temples, the folds beside the mouth, and the lips. Filler suits adults who want a measured change: a cheek that has flattened, a jawline that has softened, lips that have thinned or lost their border. It is not for anyone under 18. Who it suits and who it does not
Your first visit is a free consultation. We talk about what bothers you and what is realistic, go through your health and your medicines, examine your face at rest and moving, and take photographs for your record. You hear the options, including doing nothing, the risks and the exact cost before anything is opened. If you are new to filler you are offered time to think, usually a few days; returning clients can go ahead on the day. On the day, the skin is cleaned, numbing cream is applied if you want it, and the gel is placed with a needle or a blunt cannula in 30 to 45 minutes. You leave with a written aftercare sheet and a number you can reach day and night.
You see the change straight away, although swelling makes the area look fuller than the final result. Swelling peaks at about 48 hours and settles by day five; a bruise can take up to two weeks to fade. Most people see the settled result at about two weeks, which is when we review you and add a top-up if you want one. In the cheeks, chin and jawline most people see the effect for about 12 to 18 months (manufacturer data for Revolax, Teosyal and Juvederm, 2026). Lips move all day, so lip filler fades faster, usually 6 to 12 months. Results vary with the product, the area, the amount used and how your body breaks it down.
Filler suits adults in good health whose concern is lost volume or lost definition. It does not suit anyone under 18 (it is an offence in England to give a cosmetic filler to a child), anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with an allergy to hyaluronic acid or local anaesthetics, an active cold sore or skin infection, a tendency to raised scarring, untreated epilepsy, or a filler already in the area that cannot be dissolved. We do not treat the nose, the area between the eyebrows or the forehead, because these carry the highest risk of a blocked vessel and loss of sight. Under the eyes is assessed case by case. If you are being asked to have filler by someone else, we will not book you.

Lip filler in East Finchley
Lip filler is the same hyaluronic acid gel, placed in the lips to add volume, define the border, even out the two sides or soften the lines around the mouth. We start modestly: most first treatments use 0.5 to 1 ml, because swollen lips look bigger than the final result and it is easy to add more at your two-week review. Expect more swelling than other areas, often bruising, and small lumps you can feel but not see for two to four weeks. If you get cold sores, tell us: we never treat during a flare, and there is a prescription option we can discuss with you in person to lower the chance of one.
The honest limit
Filler puts back support. It does not change skin quality, it does not soften expression lines, and it will not lift a heavy lower face: that needs other treatments or surgery, and we will say so. Adding more product to chase a line usually looks worse, not better, and hyaluronic acid can remain in the tissue long after it stops being visible. Results vary and cannot be guaranteed.
Risks
Common and short-lived: swelling, bruising, tenderness, firmness and small lumps for one to two weeks, and a cold sore flare around the mouth if you are prone to them. Less common: lumps that stay or appear weeks later, infection, a bluish tint where gel sits close to the surface, or gel moving slightly. Rare but serious: a blocked blood vessel, which can damage the skin and, very rarely, cause loss of sight. Published estimates put a blocked vessel at roughly 1 in 2,000 to 1 in 10,000 treatments and it is thought to be under-reported (review, 2026). We screen for it, inject slowly, use cannulas where they lower the risk, and keep a dissolving treatment for hyaluronic acid on site at all times.
Frequently asked questions
Does filler hurt?
Most people feel pressure and a few sharp moments rather than real pain. The gel contains a local anaesthetic and we can numb the skin first. The area is tender for a few days afterwards.
How long does dermal filler last?
About 12 to 18 months in the cheeks, chin and jawline, fading gradually. Lips are closer to 6 to 12 months because they move so much. Your product, the area and your own metabolism all play a part, so results vary.
Can I have filler if I am under 18?
No. It has been an offence in England since 2021 to give a cosmetic filler to anyone under 18, and we may ask for photo ID.
How much filler do I need?
Most single areas use 1 to 2 ml. Lips usually start at 0.5 to 1 ml. We would rather build a bigger change over two visits than put it all in at once, and you only pay for what is opened.
How much does lip filler cost?
Per ml it is the same as any other area: Revolax £130, Teosyal £240, Juvederm £280. Most first lip treatments use 0.5 to 1 ml, and you only pay for what is used.
Can filler be dissolved?
Hyaluronic acid filler (Revolax, Teosyal, Juvederm) can be dissolved with a dissolving treatment we keep on site, used for a complication or when product is in the wrong place. Radiesse and Sculptra cannot be dissolved, which is one reason they are assessed separately.
Can I go back to work the same day?
Usually, yes, with some swelling. No make-up for 12 hours, no alcohol, heat or hard exercise the first day, no facials or dental work for a while afterwards. Plan treatment at least two weeks before an event or photographs.
Will my lips look overdone?
Not if we do our job. We treat the lips at rest and moving, start small, and review you at two weeks. If you want a change your lips cannot support, we will tell you and talk about what would suit you instead.
